The Proportions

The question is what e-guitar-shape the fairest and the best, there is no clear answer. But you can assign the amount of body shapes rather distinct types of the beautiful, inconspicuous, about boring, on the slopes and ugly. Then it would be possible to use the statistics, to find a timeless mean-fixed form. By what criteria one should evaluate the forms? Let us first only in the outer body contours.

Guitar designer Sebastian Heck has e.g. proposed for the rapid detection of body proportions four dimensions: length "L", the width "B", the waistline "T" and the shoulder "S".

This is very helpful for the visual assessment. The musician, however, experiences his instrument very "haptic," with the sense of touch (certainly also acoustic of course). So we need to collect more detailed measurement positions to capture the playability and ergonomic features of the guitar.

From what perspective should we look at the forms of an electric guitar? From the peghead-plate, from the neck or the body? Let's start with the hands which are playing the instrument. The left hand (of a right-handed) on the guitar neck is not less important, but the right hand is more important. Mostly they can be chosen by plucking the sound and tone from the left if the left hand independently hammering or pull-off, there always alone on the Rights of tremolo, pots and other levers. Also the area near the bridge is to be recognized as a control center. Consequently, the crossing of the mid-line with the scale-line - the ZERO - the dock is a better choice than the zero fret on the nut. This is also to describe the body shape alone (without neck) uncontested.

Four parts body

There are some body shapes, which have almost no symmetry feature, but still makes sense to fix the midline more than the main axis of the guitar. The proportion scheme LBTS (length-width-waist- shoulder should be to capture accurately the asymmetry, separated into upper and lower halves, or four Cartesian quadrants expanded. So that every detail and its position is accurately defined.

Then we see for example, that takes place in the North West - NW - very little action, SW gets later, the pots and the electrical compartment, and in the East - NE / SE, the contours of the cutaways to the ergonomics are decisive. When designing new ways you can prepare yourself for the individual quadrant first and then try out different variations their combinations.



To recreate an electric guitar exactly, one would need a host of information that one would read out of most of the technical drawings, and the rest more or less well-known experience of the manufacturer. An amateur guitarbuilder is always at the beginning before deciding enough how much all this information in order to successfully build an individually planned guitar. A creative mind is working to take the smallest possible amount of slavishly copied characteristics of each model. And this minimum of landmarks such as the milestones in the Geodesy starts at about 12 coordinate pairs.


On one side are very plump, curvy body shapes, and other attractive, jagged, linear designs. In the latter, the milestones are easier to reposition. The rounded forms need to demand more position points in between, unless you can treat yourself the freedom and complements the curve according to their own liking.

When it comes to the dimension and only the external dimensions are important, added to the lot lines of the respective opposite milestones to the middle or intermediate scale-line (of course) only increase their values. Otherwise there's the XY coordinates of the milestones individually. We see that the zero-point position the body may be very different distances from the optical center.
